How to obtain an Australian passport in the United States of America

The Passports office at the Australian Consulate General in New York is open for passport collection and application drop-off from 9am - 5pm Monday to Friday. Passport interviews are by appointment only and are conducted from 9:15am - 12:15pm Monday to Thursday.  Please phone 1-212-351-6500 and dial 0 for reception to make an appointment.  The Consulate is closed for some public holidays.

The size and quality of your passport photograph is of critical importance. The size of your head in the photograph must comply with Australian passport requirements, which differ from United States passport photograph standards. Familiarise yourself with these requirements and ensure you submit compliant photos. Your application may be rejected because of unusable photographs.

The suggested procedure for preparing your application form is as follows:

1. Find out what type of form that you need to use.
2. Read the instruction sheets for that form.

5. Access the online forms and complete the proper       
    application.

6. Print the completed application form.

    submitting all the items necessary for your application.

9. Lodge your application at the appropriate Passports
    Office based on your location.
